The BIOT Administration is excited to announce the launch of a new website designed to provide public access to historical Chagossian records.
The records were made between 1878 and 1971 by those involved in the administration of the Chagos Archipelago. They were retained by the BIOT Administration following the creation of the British Indian Ocean Territory in 1965.
All records held by BIOTA of the births, marriages, and deaths that took place on the Chagos Archipelago between 1878 and 1971 have now been digitised to enable the Chagossian community and others who have an interest in the history of the Chagos Archipelago to access them.
Users can use the website to search for a record. Images of birth records older than 100 years, marriage records older than 75 years, and death records older than 50 years can be downloaded directly from the website. Users can request images of more modern records by submitting a request to BIOTA.
